Trek Day 5
A short entry as my battery is dying...
Today we left Tennessee behind us, briefly dipped into Georgia, then hit Alabama and Mississippi. Two stops on the way today. First was the Jack Daniel's Distillery. I don't drink anymore, and even when I did I hated Jack Daniel's. I just about managed not to throw up.
Second stop was the Civil Right Museum in Birmingham Alabama.
Humbled
As a white, raised in the home counties of England, it is humbling to see the way Black Americans were treated until so relatively recently.
For me, the most moving part was viewing Martin Luther King Jr's "I have a dream" speech. These are rightfully seen as extremely powerful words, but they rang even clearer because only days before I had stood at the exact spot where he spoke those words.
I am now sat at a picnic table enjoying 24Mb Broadband in the soggy backwoods of Mississippi. Sweet.
Goodnight.

Sounds like you're adjusting to the "camping life" quite well! Rain, heat, humidity, strange sounds in the night... I LOVE IT! :)
ReplyDeleteYou haven't mentioned how many stars you can see on a clear night. That's my favorite part.
Mississippi isn't my favorite part of the US, though!
